I am in no way shape or form a professional in BLW but I can share what we did and how it worked for us.
If you are not aware of what Baby Lead Weaning is I would suggest you do some research on it a make a decision on if you think it is right for you and your family. I know after reading this book and talking to Mr. Big Truck it was a no brainer that we were going to go that route with #babybigtruck and any other children we may have.
When #babybigtruck was born I had it in my mind that I would strictly nurse her until she was 6 months old and then we would slowly start to introduce solid table food by giving her a little bit of whatever we were eating everyday. I love when I have a plan in my head and God seems to laugh in my face and say yeah oh lets do this my way now. Well played God, well-played. Two days after we got home from the hospital I had to take #babybigtruck for a check up and much to my dismay she had not gained weight. In fact she lost weight. I was confused as to how that happened seeing how she would latch on and stay on for a good 30 minutes every 2 hours around the clock. To say I was devastated was an understatement. I immediately started to give her formula and she started to thrive.
We started with 2 ounces every 2 hours. Next thing I knew she was 4 months old and sucking down 4 eight ounce bottles a day and was looking for more food. What was a mama to do? Enter baby lead weaning.
In the beginning she would sit on my lap and reach for my plate and help herself to something on my plate and gnaw at it. She was happy as a clam. I started putting her in her high chair and every time I would sit to eat something I would always offer her some. By the time she was 6 months she was eating/playing with everything and anything.
I know a lot of people who are concerned with choking using this method but I know from our experience that we only had to intervene two times. Both times I had to help her all I did was finger sweep her mouth and she was good to go. My suggestion to that is to TRUST your baby as odd as that may sound. I know I am the more “relaxed” parent when it come to Mr. Big Truck and I so I would typically be the one to introduce new foods to her. I would let her explore the food and “play” with it so to speak. I would let her do whatever she wanted. She would shove all kind of food in her mouth. Sometimes she would cough on something but that was her learning how much she could handle and it was her learning how to deal with things in her mouth.
On any given day she will eat yogurt, eggs, toast, fruit, veggies, fish, pasta. Really anything and everything we ever offered her she would happily take and suck on and mash-up with her gums. To this day she will eat anything we put on her plate. I have noticed that when given options on her plate she tends to go for the fruits and veggies first and then eat the meat. She is also a big time carb baby and will house herself some bread and pasta if given the chance.
I honestly think the reason she is such a good eater now is because we started on table food right away and did not bother with traditional baby food. Girlfriend is not afraid to try anything and has even surprised us with the mature pallet she already has. Mr. Big Truck and I have talked many times about how well she eats and how we are so so happy we decided to give BLW a try. We have also said that when we have more kids we will absolutely go that route with them unless something comes up where we can not.
