Mama Intuition

Hey friends!

Today I want to talk about Mama Intuition. Specifically how you as a mama should ALWAYS follow it.

#babybigtruck is now 19 months and while she is thriving in some things she is behind the eight ball in others. For instance she is thriving in her physical abilities. She can and will entertain herself for a while. She can feed herself. She plays well with others most of the time. She can get her point across most of the time. However she is behind the eight ball when it comes to her speech. Granted I do not expect her to be talking in full blow sentences or anything like that but girlfriend should be able to say certain words and say them clearly at this point.

When she was 18 months we went for our checkup and her doctor asked me if she had 10-15 words that she could say and use correctly. I said no. I asked her doctor if we should be concerned with that and he said no. He said he would be happy if she had at least 5 words that she could say and use correctly which at that point she did not. I asked the doctor what we should do to help encourage her usage of words and he really didn’t answer me. I was not pleased. That is when my Mama Intuition kicked in. First order of business is to find a new pediatrician.

Second order of business call early intervention.

I have friends who have kids and some of their kids have been through the early intervention program here in Jersey and we got to talking about that. My one friend said that it was one of the best things she did with her daughter and shortly after they started therapy she saw significant improvements in her daughter. I called and made an appointment to have her evaluated. My thinking was the worst they were going to tell me was that she was not eligible for the program and maybe point me in the direction of getting help some place else.

Last Tuesday was evaluation day. The two therapists who came to evaluate #babybigtruck were the nicest people ever. They sat on the floor with #babybigtruck and played with her and observed her doing things while they talked with me and Mr. Big Truck and asked us questions. After about an hour or so of them playing with her they were done and we sat at the table while they did some paperwork while they asked me a few more questions. At the end of the evaluation they told us that #babybigtruck was in fact eligible to be part of the early intervention program. We have a few more meetings to get through to set goals and figure out when she will actually start with her therapy but I look forward to her starting to work with her therapist and start to progress in the areas she needs the help.

So yeah when Mama Intuition speaks up listen to it. Always. You know your child better than anyone. You have to advocate for your child especially when they are so young and can’t do it for themselves.

Delaney did Early Intervention when she was 18 months old. She had speech therapy and some other kind of therapy where they encouraged her to play with toys. She had two different therapists (who lived in Lakewood), but the women were so great!!!!! She was only in the program about 6 or 7 months and then it wasn’t needed anymore 😀

Good for you!! Early intervention is so great! I did in home therapy and on the classroom for years! That’s what my degree is for. I’m sure she will do great.

Both of my children went through the EI program in IL. I believed in it so much I went back to school to finish my degree and now work as a service coordinator here. Moms intuition never fails. Early Intervention works. Best of luck to your family!

Moms intuition is always spot on for sure! Congrats for finishing your degree! Where are you a service coordinator for? What state?

Thank you! I am a coordinator in Illinois. We have had budget issues but our program has some very dedicated therapists that make it work.
